PLEX ROKU DIRECT PLAY MOVIE
I installed that channel and tried playing a movie with DTS and it works! Yay! There is a channel for Roku called Plex rarfix which will enable Roku to play DTS audio amoung other things. The most preferred Plex client is the Nvidia Shield TV Pro 4K followed by the Apple TV 4K and Roku Ultra. I never would have thought of this, but it turns out that by changing that setting, the majority of my files now can direct play WITH audio! Problem remained with anything having DTS audio, as Roku cannot handle that, so transcoding is necessary. The ideal Plex client to watch movies on is a media streaming device that allows direct play more often than transcoding. The mini was able to handle the transcoding, but it was not the network solution I was looking for.Įarlier this morning at the Plex forum it was suggested to me that the possible problem with the direct play audio might be due to the audio mode on the Roku being set to stereo and I should switch it to surround. I tried a work around of adding the Drobo to the Plex server on the Mac Mini, so that the Mini would handle the transcoding. I was about to give up and return the Drobo 5n and possibly invest in the more expensive Drobo 5d instead (also not a network solution).
When I tried to direct play on the Roku with the files served by the Drobo, the video played great, loaded fast, but without audio. For days I was changing settings on the Plex channel on the Roku to try and play direct from Drobo, without success. I did not realize that any transcoding would be necessary until I switched over to Drobo Plex server and got stuttering and stopping video. I did not anticipate there would be any problems switching to the Drobo. My files are mostly mkv with a few mp4 thrown in. Once your Roku finds Plex in the Channel store, it shows on your screen. Next, scroll down to Search Channels and enter Plex in the search bar to the right. Yes, previously my media was on external drives connected to the Mac Mini. Scroll down the list on the left-hand side of the Roku home page.
